Lost or broken Vizio TV remote — what you can do
Good news: Vizio SmartCast TVs (2016 and newer) confirm a new phone with a PIN on the screen. You type it in NoStrings, so no remote is needed, even the first time. Vizio support is new but fully supported, not beta.
Connect without the remote
- Make sure the TV is on and connected to the same Wi-Fi router as your iPhone (not a guest network). Turn VPN off on the iPhone.
- Install NoStrings, open it and allow Local Network access when the iPhone asks.
- Tap your Vizio TV in the list.
- The TV shows a 4-digit PIN. Type it in the app. Done.
If the TV asks to confirm
The PIN is the confirmation, so there's nothing to press on the TV. If the PIN disappears before you finish typing, just connect again to get a new one.
Turn the TV on
NoStrings can switch the TV on over Wi-Fi when Quick Start is on: Settings → System → Power Mode → Quick Start. The app also shows whether the TV is on.
From the iPhone you get the remote keys, a list of popular apps and the inputs.
Keep in mind: you do this only once. After the first connection the TV remembers your iPhone, and the app connects by itself every time you open it. No remote needed again.
Questions
Can I switch to HDMI without the remote?
Yes. The app has the TV's input list.
The app can't find my Vizio.
Check that both are on the same router (not a guest network), VPN is off, and Local Network access is allowed for NoStrings in iPhone Settings.
