Lost or broken Roku remote — what you can do
Roku is the easiest case. Roku TVs and Roku streaming sticks and boxes don't ask you to confirm a new phone at all, so NoStrings can take over right away over your home Wi-Fi. Roku support in NoStrings is new: if something doesn't work on your model, tap Send report in the app and we'll fix it.
Connect without the remote
- Make sure the Roku is on and connected to the same Wi-Fi router as your iPhone (not a guest network). Turn VPN off on the iPhone.
- Install NoStrings, open it and allow Local Network access when the iPhone asks.
- Tap your Roku in the list. That's it.
If the TV asks to confirm
It won't: Roku has no confirmation step. If the app says the Roku blocks remote apps, someone has changed a setting. Turn it back on here: Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Control by mobile apps → Network access → Enabled.
Out of the box this access is allowed, so most people never need to touch it. If it was switched off, you'll need a remote once to change it back (a replacement Roku remote works).
Turn the TV on
Many Roku TVs with Fast TV start turned on (Settings → System → Power) can be switched on over the network from the app. A Roku stick or box runs whenever the TV it's plugged into is on.
Keep in mind: you do this only once. After the first connection the TV remembers your iPhone, and the app connects by itself every time you open it. No remote needed again.
Questions
Do I need a Roku account or the Roku app?
No. NoStrings talks to the Roku directly over your Wi-Fi. No sign-in.
Can I open a YouTube or Netflix link on the Roku?
Yes. Copy the link on your iPhone, paste it in the app's Keyboard and tap “Play on TV”.
The app can't find my Roku.
Check that both are on the same router (not a guest network), VPN is off, and Local Network access is allowed for NoStrings in iPhone Settings.
Something doesn't work on my model.
