Lost or broken LG TV remote — what you can do
Good news: with an LG webOS TV you don't need the remote at all, not even the first time. NoStrings works over your home Wi-Fi. When your iPhone connects for the first time, the app can ask the TV to show a code on the screen, and you type it on the phone. No mouse, no spare remote.
Connect without the remote
- Make sure the TV is on and connected to the same Wi-Fi router as your iPhone (not a guest network). Turn VPN off on the iPhone.
- Install NoStrings, open it and allow Local Network access when the iPhone asks.
- Tap your LG TV in the list.
- On the pairing screen tap “No remote? Show a code on the TV instead”.
- Type the code shown on the TV into your iPhone. Done.
If the TV asks to confirm
With the code you don't need to press anything on the TV. If the TV shows a “Yes / No” request instead, there's another way: most LG TVs have a small joystick button under the LG logo on the bottom edge. Push it sideways to “Yes” and press it in.
Turn the TV on
NoStrings can switch the TV on over Wi-Fi. Turn this on once on the TV: Settings → General → Devices → TV Management → Turn on via Wi-Fi (on older models it's called Mobile TV On). The TV needs to stay connected to your network while it's off.
Keep in mind: you do this only once. After the first connection the TV remembers your iPhone, and the app connects by itself every time you open it. No remote needed again.
Questions
Can I switch to HDMI or another input?
Yes. The app has the TV's source / input list, so you can switch to a game console or TV box without the remote.
The code doesn't appear on the TV.
Make sure the TV is fully on (picture on the screen), the iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi with VPN off, and tap the button again.
How do I type or open a YouTube video?
The keyboard works in the TV's browser, search and settings. YouTube and Netflix use their own on-screen keyboard, so instead copy a YouTube or Netflix link on the phone, paste it in the app's Keyboard and tap “Play on TV”.
